Sunny Health and Fitness are well known for building high-quality, affordable cardio gear. I’ve been reviewing their equipment for years and have always been impressed with what they offer for the price point. Their Asuna Space Saving Treadmill is from their compact treadmill range. It’s been designed specifically for people who are tight on space but want a treadmill with a large enough running deck for both walking and jogging.

Feels solid – Heavy Duty Frame

The Asuna Treadmill isn’t going to feel cheap like so many compact and under-desk treadmills. The heavy-duty frame gives it the feel of something more expensive, and it feels solid, which is surprising for this type of treadmill. The Asuna weighs nearly 100lb which tells us the quality of materials is high. And it’s the quality that sells this treadmill.

Overall this is an impressive compact treadmill from Sunny Health. The essentials are all there. Still, we’re missing an incline, and the monitor lacks workout programs, so, like most compact treadmills, it has some drawbacks.

Despite those minor drawbacks, it is a treadmill worth taking seriously, which is why today I want to talk about everything it has to offer. First, let’s take a quick look at the Product specs!

Why Do We Like The Asuna Space Saving Treadmill?

What you have to love most about this treadmill from Sunny is just how easy it is to store. This is a fold-flat treadmill. And what I mean by fold-flat is that it folds completely flat, so you can store it under the bed or against a wall, and all it takes is just a few turns of a key to fold.

Can Be Stored Under a Bed

Because of its fold-flat feature, the Asuna Treadmill is an excellent choice for people who live in apartments or are tight on space. Fold-flat treadmills are nothing new, but what I like about Sunny’s is that it’s a high-quality compact folding treadmill. It’s not a lightweight, cheap fold flat treadmill. There’s some weight with the Asuna, which is I mentioned in the intro is a good clue that this treadmill is made from high-quality materials. Plus, that extra weight will help keep this Asuna planted to the floor exactly what you want.

Great Length Runny Deck For a Compact Treadmill

Something else I like about the Asuna Treadmill is the length of the running belt. It’s pretty long at 49″. I’m used to seeing 43″ running belts on treadmills of this size.

The Asuna is designed slightly differently from other treadmills. There is no bulky end to deal with, which allows for the longer running belt. The designs that good Sunny even won a design award for this treadmill.

A 49″ running belt is going to allow users up to 6ft to jog comfortably on this machine. If you’re taller, you’ll still be able to use the treadmill for walking and light jogging. Still, anyone over 6’2″ is better off looking for a larger treadmill that can cope with larger strides.

Still, a compact treadmill that offers a 49″ running belt is impressive, and so is the belt width. At 18″, you shouldn’t have to worry about stepping off the machine while jogging.

2.5HP Motor – Good For Walking and Jogging

A 2.5HP motor is what I was hoping to find on this treadmill from Sunny. You see a lot of treadmills in this price range, especially the fold-flat treadmill with 1.5HP motors. 1.5HP is only good for walking and light jogging, it’s under-powered for anything more intense. And if you’re a heavier user, you’ll find 1.5HP motors burn out after a few months.

2.5HP is a must if you want a treadmill for jogging, and it’s a must if you are a heavier user because you need a motor that can cope with that extra weight regularly. Thumbs up here for Sunny to include a decent motor, yes, it’s not a 4 or 5HP commercial-grade motor, but it’s easily powerful enough for home workouts and should last years if kept clean.

Easy To Use but Basic Control Console

There’s nothing complicated about the Asuna monitor. It’s about as basic as they come. There are no workout programs, no way to monitor your pulse, and sadly no fitness apps to take advantage of.

A motor this basic can be a drawback for many, and it might even be a deal killer for some. However, Im someone who likes basic monitors as not only do they keep the price of the treadmill down, but they’re also easy to use, and they don’t take half an hour to set up.

Some treadmill monitors have so many features that most people don’t end up using half of them, and it’s a waste of money. Sometimes simple is best. You can always download a fitness app on your phone or tablet or watch TV while exercising.

On the positive side, the Asuna monitor tracks all the essential workout data, such as speed, time, distance, and calories. There’s an integrated pedometer to track your steps during each workout session. Plus built-in speakers and MP3 player.

Anti-Shock System – Reduce Impact By 40%

It was just a few years ago that anti-shock systems featured only on high-end treadmills. Thankfully these systems have filtered their way down to the lower-priced models, so all can take advantage of them, even those on a budget. Anti-shock systems are systems that sit under the running belt of your treadmill, designed to protect your joints from the impact of each foot strike.

The Sunny Health Asuna uses a simple anti-shock system, but it works well and reduces the impact on your joints by a whopping 40%.

No Incline

At this price point, I expect to see an incline feature, maybe not a power-adjusted one but at least a 3-way manual incline.

However, it is common for fold flat treadmills not to include an incline feature as the design doesn’t really allow for a decent one. You’ll find inclines on more expensive models but not on models as slim as the Sunny Asuna. If you want a treadmill that slides easily under a bed? It seems an incline feature is something you have to go without.

Do I Need a Treadmill Mat?

The Sunny Asuna is pretty heavy at 95lb, so it shouldn’t move around too much when in use. Still, a treadmill mat will also help protect your floors, and if you’re in an apartment, a treadmill mat can come in handy as it will absorb some of the impact of your workouts and keep noise levels down.

Quick Assembly

Everything about this treadmill comes pre-assembled; you can use it right out of the box. However, you’ll still need to unlock the treadmill handles, which take five turns of the key, not just one like the video shows. You will need to do this whenever you want to unlock or lock the handles to fold and unfold. It only takes a minute on each side.

Alternative

Marcy Folding Treadmill

Marcy is another company specializing in affordable gym gear, they’ve been around for decades, and you can usually trust these guys to make durable high-quality equipment.

Like Sunny Health & Fitness, Marcy has a compact folding treadmill, and yes, this one folds almost completely flat, so it can be stored under a bed. It’s so compact some users are storing the Marcy treadmill in their closets.

And it doesn’t suffer from a short running belt because, like the Asuna, the Marcy treadmill has a 49″ running belt, so it’s suitable for users up to 6ft for walking and jogging; however, the belt is rather narrow at 16.”

The Marcy Folding treadmill is slightly cheaper than the Asuna and surprisingly comes with a better monitor as the Marcy monitor includes 12 workout programs. You have speed control buttons on the handles, which is a nice touch.

Quality is good with this treadmill; weighing over 100lb, it feels sturdy and well made. Many users have mentioned how solid this thing feels.

To Sum Up

The Asuna Space Saving Treadmill looks great. Sunny has done well with their compact treadmill, the design is modern, and the treadmill is well made. Still, even though this machine feels solid, it’s not a treadmill designed for heavy use and intense workouts. It sits happily in the mid-level treadmill market, and the price reflects that. It’s a treadmill perfect for walking and jogging.

What best is this treadmill can be stored flat under a bed or against a wall; it’s easy to set up and even easier to use. It’s a fuss-free compact treadmill. I love the design, its simplicity, and the quality is good for the price—overall, another impressive treadmill from Sunny, designed for people tight on space.
